7 Tips To Help You Stick With Your Exercise Routine

"I'm too tired, the weather is bad, I'm on vacation, I don't have time." Whatever it might be, it's easy to talk yourself out of exercising. Even when you have the best intentions to work out, excuses are easy to find. However, the right attitude and a few simple tricks can keep your fitness routine from falling off track.

Here are a few ways to keep your head in the game:

1. Do it For You

Studies show that people who are externally motivated (exercising to look good for an upcoming event) do not stick with working out consistently. While those who are internally motivated (exercising because they enjoy it) are the ones who stay in it for the long run!

2. Mix it Up

Variety is the key component to avoid getting bored of your workouts. If the bike is your machine of choice, try the stair climber for a cardio switch up. Simply changing set counts and reps can be enough to keep you interested. You don't have to reinvent an entire plan each week, but jumping into a new fitness class can be a game-changer.

3. Don't Be Your Own Drill Sergeant

Half the people who start a new exercise program ditch it within the first year. Often this is because they can't keep up the boot-camp pace they've forced on themselves. It's better to work within your limit and gradually get stronger. Not to mention doing too much can leave you sore, injured, and discouraged. Baby steps!

4. Find a Workout Buddy

When your inner demons order you to hit the couch instead of the treadmill, a workout partner can hold you accountable. It's much easier to bail out on the gym than a workout planned with a friend! Studies show you'll also work out longer when you're with a pal.

5. Don't Compare Yourself To Others

Comparison and the pursuit of perfection go hand in hand. However, this mindset can be discouraging and prevent you from reaching your goals. Nobody has perfect form on their first day of strength training. Try to focus on goals that are right for you, your body and your lifestyle.

6. Focus On The Present

Whether you missed a week at the gym, polished off a pint of ice cream or drank one too many cocktails, let it go! Don't waste time worrying about the past and release any guilt. Instead, focus on getting back into your healthy routine as soon as possible.

7. Celebrate!

It takes weeks to see real changes. One pound of weight loss or muscle gained is a reason to reward yourself. Maybe you ran a little bit further this week, congratulations! You deserve to celebrate your small victories.
